Activities to Help with Tourette Syndrome

Tourette Syndrome is a condition of the nervous system, which causes people to engage in repetitive movements or unwanted sounds, also known as tics. When a person is under stress, the tics can become more severe or last longer. However, there are things you can do to help relieve stress and tics from occurring less often. In this blog post, we share some activities that can help.

Drawing or Painting

Research has shown drawing and painting can help reduce tics, due to its calming and relaxing nature. This activity also helps to build fine motor skills and evokes creativity. Some people with Tourette Syndrome may also have trouble communicating through speech, so drawing is a good way for them to communicate with others.

Exercise

Exercise has been shown to reduce anxiety, improve physical and mental health and can help reduce the rate of tics. Some suggestions of exercise include going for a walk with your child, taking them to the park, swimming or dancing.

Get Some Rest

People with Tourette Syndrome can have troubles with sleeping; therefore, it is important to try to maintain a regular sleep schedule, making sure you are getting a decent amount of sleep.

Music

Studies have shown listening or playing music has been shown to help reduce tics, as music is a good distraction for the mind and body.

Word games

Word games have many cognitive benefits for people, improving their communication and reading skills. Word games also can distract by keeping one’s mind busy. Examples of some word games include scrabble, word searches, pictionary, roleplaying games and crosswords.

Quiet Space

Having a safe space available to go to when the tics are becoming too much, can help calm and relax the person. Also do not be afraid to tell someone that you need a moment alone if you are out with someone, are at work or at school.
